Everyone is looking for answers to the sustainability puzzle on both a global and personal level, but not everyone has the ability or desire to work 10-plus acres of land. Perhaps it’s a lack of resources, proximity to a job, or simply the love of neighbors and community that keeps certain individuals from establishing traditional homesteads. In partnership with New Society Publishers, the MOTHER EARTH NEWS INSTITUTE: Urban Homesteading is designed to equip those in municipal communities with the skills and knowledge needed to become more self-reliant.

At Urban Homesteading, you’ll learn ways to slash your utility bills, grow your own medicinal herbs, get garden advice to fill your pantry with staples year-round, discover tips on how to maximize your lot with urban permaculture, observe the basics of urban beekeeping and more. You don’t want to miss this one-of-a-kind event!

Urban Homesteading is a unique, educational event platform designed to merge the intensive workshop forums from our MOTHER EARTH NEWS INSTITUTES with the exhibition space found at the MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIRS. This inaugural Kansas event takes place in the heart of Lawrence on the 5th and 6th floors of the University of Kansas Student Union. The marketplace, featuring unique goods and services for the budding urban homesteader, is located in the ballroom on the 5th floor and is free to the public. We will provide limited complimentary tickets to the workshops in Woodruff Auditorium, also on the 5th floor. Please check for ticket availability at the information desk. The 6th floor is reserved for registered guests and will feature more than half a dozen workshop spaces with talks and demonstrations by some of the leading authorities on organic gardening, energy independence, urban agriculture, food preservation, natural health and more.

Many presenters have books published by our partner, New Society Publishers. New Society is an activist, solutions-oriented publisher focused on bringing tools for a world of changes. For more than 30 years, their mission has been to publish books that contribute in fundamental ways to building an ecologically sustainable and just society, and to do so with the least possible impact on the environment.

About the MOTHER EARTH NEWS Institute

The MOTHER EARTH NEWS INSTITUTE is a relatively new event concept designed for people looking to go deeper into interesting, fun and educational experiences over several days. Our national events team is constantly researching various topics, such as artisan cheesemaking, backyard beekeeping, raising heritage breeds, heirloom vegetable gardening, herbal health, agri-business and more. The inaugural Institute, The Joy of Cheese, was held in November, 2015, followed by The Basics of Beekeeping in May, 2016, and Finding Your Farm Tipping Point with Joel Salatin in November, 2016.
